Tampico is located at the southeastern tip of the State of Tamaulipas on the coast of the Gulf of México. It borders to the north with the municipality of Altamira and to the east with Cd. Madero which together form what is known as the Metropolitan Zone. To the south it borders with the State of Veracruz joined together by the Tampico Bridge and to the west with San Luis Potosí. This city and port has a population of approximately 295,000 inhabitants (1) that represent 10.73% of the total state population, which together with the inhabitants of Altamira and Cd. Madero sum up to 659,000 people in a geographical extension of 1800 km2. Its influx zone includes the cities of Valles, Ébano and Tamuín, San Luis Potosí; Tantoyuca, Tempoal, Pánuco, Tuxpam, Cerro Azul, Naranjos and Pueblo Viejo, Veracruz; Huejutla, Hidalgo; Mante, Aldama, González and Manuel, Tamau-lipas which all together sum up approximately 2,000,000 people.
Its climate is predominantly subtropical and humid, reaching average temperatures of 24°C with a maximum of 37°C during summer and 10°C with a minimum of 9°C during winter. The winds which prevail during autumn are locally known as “nortes” while in the other seasons they vary from south to north. The annual precipitation varies from 188.6 a 1,044.10 mm3 being July the rainiest month of the year. The region constitutes one of the most important hydraulic basins in the country. It is surrounded by a great lagoon and river system which guarantees the availability of water throughout the zone where there already exist 5 supplying plants with a delivery capacity of 2,200 liters/sec.
Tampico is primarily a commercial and service city. Here you will find important local department stores of great tradition as well as national and international store chains, banks, schools and universities and modern hospitals. Aside from owning a great quantity of tourist attractions, Tampico concentrates most of its region’s services. That is why pleasure and business tourism is a very important branch.
