The southern zone of Tamaulipas belongs to what is known as La Huasteca, a region rich in natural resources and includes the northern part of Veracruz, a part of Hidalgo and San Luis Potosí.  Its warm and tropical climate in the plains with some precipitation during summer is favourable for the fertile lands that are used for agriculture and livestock farming.

This extended farming region produces relevant volumes of grains, sugar cane and vegetable gardens.  Among the variety of cultivations you will find corn, safflower, soy bean, cotton, red chilli, onion, watermelon, melon and citrics.

Concerning to livestock farming, there are more than one million cattle heads, outstanding the breeding of zebu for producing meat and milk as for breeding registry animals.  Other important breeds are Beef Master, Charoláis, Mexican Creole, Santa Gertrudis and Swiss.

Although commercial fishing at the Gulf Coast has been going through a rough crisis, it is important in sea, rivers and lagoons and it is a main source of food and employment for its inhabitants.  Among the most important species you can find shrimp which has a huge exportation demand to the USA.  That is why many fishing companies have established here that are in charge of freezing, packing and storing shrimp.  Other species include: red snapper, sea bass, oysters, crab, trout and shark.  Nowadays there is a growing development for aquaculture of farms for shrimps, tilapia and black bass.
