Tampico is the most important commercial and service center in the region which are really significant for its GDP. Here you will find commercial chains, supermarkets, banks, clinics, hospitals and schools which serve the inhabitants of the three cities that form the Metropolitan Zone, the towns south of Tamaulipas, the Veracruz and San Luis Potosi huastecas which sum up more than 2 million people.

In the Metropolitan Zone you will find prestigious national and as international supermarkets such as Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, City Club, Soriana, HEB, Bodega Aurrera, Mega Comercial Mexicana, Chedraui, Arteli. Also, there are many department stores such as Liverpool, Woolworth and Sears as well as specialized ones such as Office Depot and Home Depot, convenience stores besides medium and small stores. There are also many car agencies that serve the whole region.

The increase in business and pleasure tourism and the rising commercial boom with the establishment of new franchises, besides motivating the construction of modern shopping centers, have given as a result the creation of new job opportunities as well as the modernizing of hotels and restaurants which have reactivated the local economy. Among the most important shopping centers you will find Tres Arcos, Plaza Crystal, Plaza Covadonga, Plaza Palmas, Plaza Campestre, Plaza Dorada, Plaza Herradura and Plaza Faja de Oro. Concerning financial services and banking sector, here the country’s most important banks, finance companies, bureaus de change and developing banks are located here.

Another sector that has earned much important in Tampico is the health sector. The Metropolitan Zone concentrates more than 12 private and public hospitals with the best technological advances supported by a medical team that covers de region’s demand. One of the most prominent and modern hospitals is the Beneficencia Española de Tampico. This year, the Hospital Angeles is awaiting its inauguration. Only a few months ago, in Altamira, the Centro de Rehabilitación Integral Teletón (CRIT) was inaugurated.
