During the last decades, the Metropolitan Zone has triggered the development of many industries, principally the petrochemical branch. Those industries have settled in the Industrial Complex of Altamira that covers an area of 5098 hectares and make most of all the advantages the Port of Altamira has to offer for the import of raw materials and the export of finished products.
It has a 4,000 hectare industrial park which surrounds the port area. Most of the have been equipped with basic services and are ready to be used. This industrial complex has had an accelerated growth due to all of its advantages. Investors have seen the opportunity to efficient their production processes thanks to the location of the port of Altamira inside the same area through which many raw materials and finished products are imported. Its strategic location and vast territorial reserves, as well as supplying sources of natural resources, energy and raw materials have given as a result the installation of more that 30 petrochemical companies which produce petrochemical raw materials such as PVC, polystyrene, white pigment, ABS and other materials that are exported to more than 84 countries in 5 continents. Despite of being the strongest petrochemical sector of the zone, other companies are located here such as La Pureza, one of the most modern Coca-Cola bottling plants in the world. Also, Aguila de Altamira and Ibedrola are located here, two combined-cycle generators that produce a big part of the electric energy and vapor required in the port. Other industrial plants under construction are Dy-Pack, built upon 4.5 hectares with an initial investment of USD$13.9 millions.
In Cd. Madero the Francisco I. Madero PEMEX refinery is located. It is considered one of the most modern refineries in Latin America. PEMEX is also developing a great activity exploring and exploiting oil wells in Altamira, Pánuco, Ver. and Ebano SLP as well as in the Gulf of Mexico. Only 20 km. from Tampico, inthe industrial corridor of Tamós, Veracruz, Minera Autlán is located. It is the first national producer of ferro manganese.
