During the last decades, the Metropolitan Zone has triggered the development of many industries, principally the petrochemical branch. Those industries have settled in the Industrial Complex of Altamira that covers an area of 5098 hectares and make most of all the advantages the Port of Altamira has to offer for the import of raw materials and the export of finished products.

This industrial complex gathers many companies that represent more than 30% of the national production in the petrochemical branch which includes the manufacture of thermoplastic resins, black steam and titanium dioxide, as well as tereftalic acid, tereftalic dimetil, PET and polyvinyl chloride, reaching almost 2.6 million tons each year and 80% of them are exported. It has a much diversified installed capacity that includes raw materials for the manufacturing of bottles, cleaning products and plastics used for computer monitors and telephones, rubber for shoe soles and tires and even polymers for home tools, as well as fibbers for diapers and similar products. Large amount of electric energy and vapour is also produced here in power station with combined cycle such as the company Aguila Altamira, which provides the national system with 450 megawatts. Iberdola is another power station under construction that will have a capacity of 1000 megawatts. Another advantage of this complex is that it is very near to the Cactus-Reynas pipeline which provides natural gas to the region, while the water supply is guaranteed by the aqueduct that originates in the lagoonary system from the Tamesí River.
There are more than 30 petrochemical companies installed in this industrial complex with an accumulated investment of 5,500 million dollars. Among the main industries located here are CYDSA and ALFA which through its subsidiaries hold an accumulated estimated investment 1,000 millions of dollars. Other installed industries in this complex are: Shell, Dupont, Grupo Primex, Kaltex, GE Plastics, Johns Mansville, BASF, Polioles, Royal Group México, PPG Industries, Forestal Terranova, Electricidad Águila de Altamira, Ibedrola, Bioriented Films, Dynasol, Petrocel, Nhumo, Policyd, Cryoinfra, Indelpro, Tepeal, Advanced Profiles, Guilford Mills, Uniroyal Chemical and Crompcom.

In Madero City, the main installed industry is Petróleos Mexicanos with Refinería Francisco I. Madero, one of the most modern in Latin America which has recently concluded the reconfiguration of its plants. Its 20 plants with a process capacity of 186,000 bl/day in five different types of crude, obtaining the following products: liquefied gas, PEMEX Magna, PEMEX Premium and PEMEX Diesel gasolines, aviation gas, aviation fuel, disulphated diesel, sea diesel, asphalt AC-20 and AC-30 and sulphur. From Campo Tamaulipas de Altamira, PEMEX manages exploration and exploitation works in the oil wells of the Huastecas and open sea platforms as well as the Terminal Marítima Madero which registers an intense transition of petroleum ships (source: PEMEX franchise). In the neighbouring zone of Tamos Minera Autlán is located as well as the Sulfamex plant, both related to the mining-metallurgy industry, principally to the transformation of manganese products.
One of the most modern Coca-Cola bottling plants will soon be inaugurated in the region by Grupo Tampico, the oldest soft drink company in Mexico. With the latest generation installations that include from colouring sweetener to soft drink delivery, this plant will have a annual total production of 90 million soft drink boxes and a distribution capacity of one freight with 1200 boxes every 8 minutes.
