Ports
The Metropolitan Zone of Tampico, Madero and Altamira is the only place in the country and one of the few in the world that has two of the most modern and efficient ports at such short distance which works as a door to exterior commerce.

With more than 90 years of experience, the Port of Tampico is located on both margins of the Pánuco River in the coastal plain of the Gulf of Mexico. It has a longitude of 22 km, which covers from Las Escolleras to El Prieto Bridge. Its navigation canal varies depending on the needs of each terminal. This port has been operated since 1994 by the Integral Portuary Administration of Tampico (API Tampico), which has sustained it at the forefront of efficient storage and cargo operation. It guarantees the quality of its management and reliability of its service. Thanks to all of the above it has obtained the ISO-9001:2000 and ISO 14001:1996 certifications as well as the “Clean Industry” certificate by the PROFEPA.
Its public terminals have 2,147 ml of docks with 11 docking positions. Terminals 1 to 8 (1385 ml) are used for general loading, containers and direct bulk agricultural and mineral unloading; terminal 9 (185 ml) is used to operate steel and mineral exports; terminal 10 (288 ml) for the export of vehicles and bulk minerals and terminal 11 (288 ml) for the operation of fluids and steel. It also has 6 private terminals and 10 courtyards for the construction of marine platforms, 7 PEMEX docks, a dry dock, a deponent dock and a floating dock, 2 docks for the Army and Shipyard Marines as well as a storage area with 54,500 m² of storage buildings and 331,730 m² of courtyards.
This modern port offers important investment opportunities in its 30 km of available waterfronts for the development of private terminals. Another advantage is its location since it is connected by highways and railroads with the main cities and economic regions of the country including Monterrey and Mexico City, as well as the rest of the ports in the Gulf of Mexico and connecting with Manzanillo in the Pacific Ocean by railroad.

The Port of Altamira is located inside the Industrial Complex of Altamira. It is the most extensive industrial and portuary development in the country and the one with higher growth perspectives since it gathers in one same place all the services needed to enter national and international markets.

This was the first port to be privatised. Its concession for use and exploitation was given to API Altamira by the Communication and Transportation Secretariat. It has a total area for development of 3,075 acres from which 1,603 are set aside for marine terminals and services, 859 for navigation areas and 613 for coasts.
