The Metropolitan Zone is strategically communicated by air and land with the main cities in the country. From here, some national buslines operate which cover a large number of routes. In what respects to air transportation, several airlines realize daily flights to Mexico City, Monterrey NL, Veracruz and Coatzacoalcos such as Vivaerobus, Interjet and Aero-Connect operated by Aeroméxico, while Continental Airlines offers a daily flight to Houston, Texas.

This administration has given extreme priority to improve traffic flow. Great improvement has been made thanks to the road pairing of Cuauhtémoc and Ayuntamiento Avenues. Nowadays, work is being done in Avenida Universidad, Ampliación Rivera de Champayán and other important arteries. In Altamira, big infrastructure work is being done.

The accelerated industrial and commercial growth in the Metropolitan Zone and the continuous increase in the flow of merchandise, raw materials and finished products have motivated the modernization and extension of the highway circuit in Tamaulipas and other states that have been involved such as San Luis Potosí and Veracruz which will directly benefit the Metropolitan Zone. In 2010, it is expected that the federal government to initiate the Poza Rica, Ver.-Tampico express highway which will reduce the travel time between these two cities.

Local transportation has a great variety of public transportation routes that can be taken either by bus or taxi.
