An agreement was signed between the municipality and the State Government last February to develop an ambitious project for the Canal de la Cortadura (Cortadura Channel). It will be without any doubts an important tourism detonator for Tampico, changing the image of the City and integrating the Laguna del Carpintero (Carpintero Lagoon) with the Historical Downtown. The Canal de la Cortadura is a water stream that links the Pánuco River with the Carpintero Lagoon located in the heart of the city of Tampico.
This project is a key work that will allow for a navigable tour to the Gulf of Mexico, the Pánuco River and the Carpintero Lagoon and at the same time promote the related projects that will be developed by private investors, one at the interior of the lagoon and the other at the Isleta Pérez zone. In addition, this project will bring important ecological benefits that will come with the dredging and the cleaning of the lagoon, this without taking into consideration the urban and economic benefits that will be obtained with the transformation and new image of this important area and the new areas that will be opened to the people. The first stage of this important project is estimated to be completed during the second half of 2004 and consists in the construction of 7 bridges for cars, 5 for peasants and one for railroad, the later with a height of 5 meters with architectural style in harmony with other works being developed in the region. In addition, the dredging of the channel with the increase of the depth to 3 meters as established by international standards to make it navigable for sport boats of up to 27 feet of length and recreational boats of up to 40 feet.
The first stage will also cover the renovation of the areas bordering the channel improving the image of the Ávila Camacho Market and establishing commercial and food boots. The Macalito Market zone will be rebuild in tow new buildings with an architectural image in harmony to the Historical Downtown becoming an attractive commercial zone supported by vehicular and peasant areas as well as the opening of the market towards the channel. In addition, the Cortadura Channel is promoting two complimentary development projects that are named as second and third stages. Private investors will pick up the tab and will develop the infrastructure needed to attract nautical sport and business tourism from the United States. These are: an interior boat marina in local land located on the west margin of the Carpintero Lagoon and an exterior boat marina in private land at the Isleta Pérez zone, very poorly used today.
For the interior marina there are 10 acres available, property of the city. The project that will be done by private investors includes the construction of two towers that will house a hotel and corporate offices and a residential zone under the “time share” program, a boat marina for 40 boats, a commercial zone and public areas. On a side, the Espacio Cultural Metropolitano (METRO). On the exterior marina, it is estimated that its development of international levels regarding the 60,000 m2 of the land to be developed at the Isleta Pérez will house 110 wet marina docks, 200 on dry docks, support land, real estate area for commercial and services establishments as well as maintenance shops. We are sure that with the combined effort of the municipal and state governments, working alongside the private sector, the Cortadura Channel Project will be a reality in a short period of time, promoting Tampico at higher levels using its tourism infrastructure will become an important point of destination of international levels. .
