Tampico's Christ
or Lord of Mercy

At the Shrine of Tampico Alto Veracruz, located just a few minutes ahead after crossing the Tampico Bridge, the image of Jesus Christ is venerated whose long history is parallel to the origins of this city and of those villages that carried the name of Tampico.

It is said in a document written by the Parish Priest Matías Samuel in the Government Book ·1 dated October 20, 1903, that the image of “Tampico’s Lord”, which came from Vera Cruz, arrived on April 14, 1664 to the convent of antiguo Tampico.  The image was sent from Spain to Villa y Puerto de San Luis de Tampico by your Majesty the Emperor Charles V of Germany and I of Spain, although there are some discrepancy about this, since the monarch supposenly passed away on September 21, 1558, 86 years before.  It is believed that this Christ was donated by the Emperor in some kind of decree and it arrived many years later after falling in oblivion, negligence, or because until this date the taxes were not gathered together by the neighbours.

Its antiquity has been guaranteed by specialists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History who expressed that the image measuring 1.60 meters long is a sculpture realized in the XVII Century and was finely carved in red cedar, with crystal eyes, hollow at its thorax and includes a wooden cross sustained by crowned ends and a gold-plated I.N.R.I. plate.

Tampico’s Christ or Lord of Mercy is full of miracles and has countless devouts who full of faith thank him in their prayers.  Through the years, it has been under the custody of many temples, basically humble ones.  The first church and convent to welcome it was built by Brother Andrés de Olmos to bring the indians together.  It was until April 26th of 1554 when Don Luis de Velasco, Second Viceroy of New Spain, grants them to found a house and a convent for the Franciscan Holy Order.  In 1738, when the inhabitants of the old Tampico dispersed themselves and found shelter in La Joya, they took with the image of Tampico’s Christ and began building a small church to protect it and for its faithful flock to worship it.  On January 15th of 1754, Colonel Escandón ordered a church to be built which was demolished in 1756 by strong winds from the north that lashed the zone.  There was still no church by 1761 to protect the Christ, so it was still kept in the convent.

It was until October 17th of 1901 when the reconstruction of a building was authorized. A few years later, during the 1910 Revolution, the image of Christ had to be protected in a private house.  However, in 1926 during the religious persecution the priests emigrated, but the temple remained open and the festivities were celebrated as usual.

In 1955 hurricane Hilda knocked down the temple, which was built again thanks to the cooperation of the board of trustees chaired by Ing. Vicente Inguanzo and his wife Doña Gloria Rubio de Inguanzo.  Up to this day it houses the image of Tampico’s Christ or Lord of Mercy, an image that has been worshiped by people from all over the Huasteca who have adopted the liturgical celebration of Asención del Señor.  The festivities begin the previous Sunday and end with the “Mañanitas” (a Happy Birthday song in Spanish) sang to him on the eve of this important date for Catholics.  On the year 2006 it will be celebrated of May the 28th.

From Villa de San Luis de Tampico to San Salvador de Tampico

The Villa de San Luis de Tampico, founded by Brother Andrés de Olmos between the years 1530 and 1532, was legally established in 1554 thanks to the arrangements made by the Spanish king Charles V and the Second

Viceroy of New Spain Luis de Velasco, named after him.  This town is located en the right margin of the Pánuco River it what is known as Pueblo Viejo.  It was constantly persuade by Chichimeca Indians and foreign pirates commanded by the Englishman Lawrence de Jacome known in the zone as “Lorenzillo”.  Because of this, its inhabitants emigrated and settled in a place called La Joya and in 1754 founded its adjacent terrains with the name Villa de San Salvador de Tampico by Don José de Escandón in what today is known as Tampico Alto establishing the Christ in that town.
