Tampico has hosted outstanding visitors who have witnessed relevant events that became part of national history.
On April 17, 1890 Don Porfírio Díaz, Mexican president at the time, escorted by members of the cabinet and other prominent figures such as the governors of the state of Tamaulipas and the French Consul visited our city for the inauguration of the railroad connecting Tampico. On January 1889, Mexican president Don Porfírio Díaz with his wife Doña Carmen Romero Rubio de Díaz visited again Tampico, attending the inauguration of the beautiful building of the Aduana Marítima (Maritime Custom Building) and port constructions. A banquet on their behalf was held at the Casino Tampiqueño and in return for the hospitality, Mrs. Díaz donated a clock as gift of this social center. On August 30, 1921, Tampico was host of a historic event, the beginning of commercial aviation in Mexico and North America with a flight between Mexico City and this port made by the Compañía de Transportación Aérea (CMTA) ancestor of the Compañía Mexicana de Aviación (Mexicana Airlines). On March 9, 1929 the Colonel Charles August Lindberg with the ambassador of the United States in Mexico, came to Tampico to inaugurate the route Mexico-Brownsville, Texas of Mexicana de Aviación.
In 1925 the Duke and Duchess of Windsor visited our city, in reply to the invitation made by Mr. Murchinson, a wealthy Texas cattleman and oiler. In order to celebrate such an honored visit, a dinner was held at the house of Don Juan Gómez Sariol who was mayor at this time. Since the era of Don Porfírio Díaz, Tampico has been visited by great personalities that have marked the history of our country. Mexican presidents as well as candidates to the presidency such as Don Francisco I. Madero who in 1903 visited our city, Don Emilio Portes Gil who visited Tampico in 1929 at the time when he was temporary president of Mexico together Don Plutarco Elías Calles, Don Miguel Alemán and Don Adolfo Ruíz Cortines. Tampico has also received the visit from Mother Theresa of Calcuta as well as ambassadors from different countries, political figures and prestigious businessmen.
