Huasteca is the name given to this region of Mexico which covers part of the sates of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Hidalgo y San Luis Potosí, next to the Gulf of Mexico. Its limits could be determined by the Cazones and Tamesí rivers. The denomination “huasteca” comes from cultural character since the region was occupied by the huastecan culture in the prehispanic epoch.

The weather in the Huasteca plain is tropical, with a dry winter and a rain summer. In the high mountains the weather is moderate with year-round rain.

The “huapango” or "Son Huasteco”, is a sample of the musical tradition in the Huasteca. This name comes from the Nahuatl language  voice “huapantlico”, that means “on the wood platform”. It is performed with two violins, which carry the melody; also traditional are the jarana, a small five string guitar, and the huapanguera. The list of typical instruments is complete with the chirima (a wooden flute), the rebelito (a small three string violin), and the 29 string harp.
