Mega Project for the Carpenter's Lagoon

With the objective to create an infrastructure project to help Tampico promote the development of the Metropolitan Zone, the Federal, State and Municipal governments joined efforts for the creation of the Mega Project for the Carpenter’s Lagoon in a privileged area with an strategic location for its easy access and the unique beauty of the Laguna del Carpintero, a water mirror of 77 hectares that links with the Pánuco River through the Cortadura Channel.

This Project started on 2001 when the Federal Government donated to the City the last portion of the land adjacent to the lagoon. After this event, a master plan was created and a trust for the development of this area with the objective of the creation, construction commercialization and operation of the projects within the Master Plan that include the Espacio Cultural Metropolitano that houses the Metropolitan Theater, a hotel a Convention Center, a shopping senter and the Centro de Estudios de la Biodiversidad de Tamaulipas that includes an aquarium, an ecological Park and a. aviariy.

The Conventions and Exhibits Center with an estimated investment of 250 million pesos, will meet strict international quality standards so that all type of conventions and exhibits can take place of a wide variety of commercial, industrial, tourism, technological and entertainment themes of international and domestic influence. This convention center will have meeting rooms with capacity over the 9,000 m2, other particular services) 1,100 m2), front entrance (3,085 m2), maneuvers (6,825 m2), access square (7,000 m2) general services (2,000 m2) and convention’s area (1,803 m2). In addition it has been contemplated the construction of a hotel with the necessary infrastructure to provide service to the Convention Center and to the Espacio Cultural Metropolitano as well as the other areas included in the Mega Project.

The projected Shopping Center part of this Mega Project will meet the commercial, gastronomic and entertainment requirements of the inhabitants of the urban zone and its area of influence. It will house an anchor store (12,000 m2) and 2 sub anchor (6,000 m2), modern and comfortable movie theaters (5,800 m2), commercial establishments (6,000 m2) and exterior shops (2,000 m2), food areas (1,000 m2) among other services.

The Centro de Estudios de la Biodiversidad de Tamaulipas include and aquarium, a aviariy, and a botanic garden. The Aquarium with a cost of 150 million pesos will include in its first stage an area for salt water fish, sweet water fish, audio video auditorium, an interactive infant area, restaurant and souvenir shop. In the aviariy an extensive variety of birds that populate the State of Tamaulipas will be presented while the botanic garden will present the flora that the State of Tamaulipas and the Huasteca Region have.

Around the Lagoon you will find the Metropolitan Park, one of the most beautiful and popular areas of the zone, this park will benefit from the Mega Project since it will enhance the image and the services that are present today, a peasants bridge will be constructed to cross the lagoon in its narrower part consolidating the eastern with the western parts and in addition new docks will be constructed to promote the tourism and ecologic tours.
