For the last three or four years, a considerable increase in the population of crocodile of the Carpenter’s Lagoon has been noted. They have adapted very well to this water reservoir where they find abundant food and the ideal conditions for their reproduction that takes place once a year yielding an average of 35 eggs each with a survival rate of 2%.
This worried the authorities that started to study their behavior to avoid accidents, since as we all know the Carpenter’s Lagoon is surrounded by the Parque Metropolitano (Metropolitan Park), a family leisure park. The present administration of Tampico created the “Crocodile Project”, a program to handle the population of the crocodiles granted after a public auction to the MVZ Manuel Carrera Campos in representation of the Asociación de Manejadores de Vida Silvestre, A.C. (Wildlife Association).
The length of this program is estimated in 20 months in which there will be a census of the actual crocodile population at the Laguna del Carpintero to have an adequate equilibrium and feasible taking in consideration other development projects for this area, its boundaries and the Canal de la Cortadura, with the plan to relocate the excess population and the dangerous specimen to other feasible natural habitats once their adaptation and reintegration takes place. This project also includes the design and implementation of mechanisms and procedures to minimize the risk of the iteration of the animals with the people, guaranteeing the healthy development and equilibrium of the crocodile population at the Laguna del Carpintero that is estimated at 60 adult specimen.
As part of the interest of the local administration, the renowned Australian researcher, producer of the TV series “Crocodile Hunter” for the Animal Planet program was invited. Steve Irwin, who visited the city on February 2003 to witness the unique environment in which this crocodile population coexists with such a large group of people in its surroundings and to team up in the design of the control system previously, mentioned. For the observation of these crocodiles a lookout has been built in the northern part of the Metropolitan Park of Tampico being easier to watch them when the sun is high and the water levels low.
