El Tajín
The City of El Tajín that in Totonaca dialect means “the city of the God of Thunder”, is one of the most important and relevant exhibits of the Prehispanic Culture of Middle America that shows proof of centuries of evolution and the splendor of the Totonaca people. Its is situated in the municipality of Papantla, Veracruz, 10 minutes drive from the city of Poza Rica.

The city was founded circa Century IV D.C. reaching its maximum splendor between 800 and 1200 D.C. when the majority of its buildings were built. It has an area of 1.5 km2 where there are 17 ball game courts, 168 buildings in addition to squares and a small museum where some beautiful pieces are exhibited that date back to the early years to its collapse, including two of the tombs that were found at the Tajín Chico Zone.

One of the most relevant pyramids is without any doubt the Niche Pyramid, due to the more than 365 niches embedded in it that represent the 365 days of the year. The center of the building is of big stones moved into place without any other material that glue them together, with several ornamental styles similar to the ones found in other buildings. The center of the old city can be divided in 5 parts: The Plaza del Arroyo Group, The Central Zone, the Great Xicalcoliuhqui, The Tajín Chico and the Group of the Columns.
At the entrance to the archaeological zone you can enjoy one of the most spectacular ceremonies of the world, the “Voladores de Papantla” (The Flying Indians from Papantla), a cultural traditional ceremony of the Totonaca people that has been passed through generations from earlier times.
How to get there: To get to El Tajín you should cross the Puente Tampico (Tampico Bridge) and take Highway ____ to Poza Rica, Veracruz. Then take Highway 130 to Veracruz and detour to toe State Highway that goes to San Andres. Visit hours are Monday thru Friday from 9:00 to 18:00 hrs.
