At the center of the town with the same name you will find the Castillo de Teayo (Teayo’s Castle) which origins date back to 600-700 a.c. Its name is from the Huasteca word “teayo” or “teayoc” that means stone turtle. This place was the site for one of the antique Huasteca cities dated from Century X to XII and during the Late Post Classic period when a strong Mexica influence was developed. The first news of archaeological vestiges of Castillo de Teayo is due to the German archaeologist Edward Seler that visited the site in 1902.
The Castillo de Teayo is composed by two main architetonic elements. The main pyramidal base and the dwelling that its found at the top of the pyramid and that is covered by a palm roof, keeping its floor and its walls the original structure where some traces of black and red paint can still be observed. Its height is of 11.30 meters. The main staircase is embedded in the square block facing the west, which is characteristic of the coastal architecture, on its surroundings there were some effigies that are today located in an exhibit.
