Beauties of the
Huasteca Potosina

The Huasteca Potosina is a vast plain that extends to the east and to the north of the Sierra Madre Oriental foothills.  This region is rich in exotic tropical vegetation besides having countless rivers and lagoons that serve as perfect scenery for adventure tourism.
The main center of this region is Cd. Valles, located to the east of San Luis Potosí’s capitol, only 128 Km away from Tampico taking Highway 70.  Here you will find enough touristic infrastructure.  You can also begin your adventure by heading to any of the different places in the zone and practice exciting sports. We highly recommend you to supervised by specialized guides that will help you enjoy them in a safe way.

For those who love the Huasteca Culture, there is a museum in Cd. Valles called Tamuazán Museum where valuable original pieces of the Tének culture are being exhibited.  Other museums we invite you to visit are the Regional Museum Joaquín Meade and the Lariab University Museum which is sponsored by the Edward Seler Foundation located inside the Taninul Hotel, only a few kilometers away from Cd. Valles.

In the Huasteca Potosina you can admire places with great archaeological value such as the ruins of El Consuelo in Tamuín, SLP and  Tantoc or begin a journey through Edward James’ imagination visiting the Enchanted Garden (Jardín Encantado de Las Pozas) created by this eccentric artist of Xilitla.

Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism

The Huasteca Potosina has great wonders of nature that make it a special place for adventure tourism, ecotourism and the practice of extreme sports.

For river descent it has various tributaries with different flow.  One of the most popular ones is the Tamapaón River, which originates from the merging of the Santa María and Gallinas Rivers.  The ideal season is between the months of November and may.

A magnificent place to practice rappel with a 70 meter free fall is the Tamul Cascade, which was originated thanks to the 105 meter collapse of the Gallinas River.  Another impressive place to practice rappel is the Sótano de las Golondrinas in Aquizmón, the sixth deepest abyss in the world with a vertical free fall to the first base of 333 meters and 512 meters to the bottom.  There are also several caves and grottos that are good for this activity such as the Cueva de Xilitla, el Sótano de las Guaguas, la Catedral, San Cayetano and the Cueva Azul (Blue Cave).

The places we recommend you to practice kayak are the Verde River and the Micos Cascades.  There are some camping areas like Tamasopo which is a group of 3 water falls of approximately 20 meters and the Laguna de la Media Luna where you can dive with a tank.  If you want to enjoy nature we invite you to visit Puente de Dios (God´s Bridge), an astonishing place full of vegetation.
