Tamul Cascade

The Tamul Cascade is a site of matchless beauty located 40 Km from Cd. Valles, almost 3 hours form Tampico, at the municipality of Aquisimón in the Huasteca Potosina. Visiting this cascade is something we highly recommend since it is one of the greatest natural beauties of the region having the opportunity of enjoying beautiful landscapes which we guarantee will be an unforgettable experience.

There are several routes and forms of getting to the cascade; you can do it by hiring tourist services from a company or you can get there on your own, even though we highly recommend the first option since it is safer to get there with the company of an expert who knows the place already, besides all the benefits this brings with it.

You can get to Tamul in a boat or by walking. The best way of doing it is by taking a boat because the ride turns out to be a different experience in which you are able to enjoy your surroundings while you navigate through the calm waters of the Tampaón River.

Our tour day began early in the morning (6:45 AM) leaving Tampico, calculating that we would arrive to Cd. Valles before 9 AM, hour in which we previously asked our tour guide to pick us up in a hotel in that city. When that happened we took the Mexico DF highway. We made a turn to the left when we arrived to the 23rd Km into the road that showed the entry to the Ejido Santa Anita, in which we rode 20 KM through a road of regular conditions. After seeing many counties, including Tanchanchín, we arrived to the Ejido La Morena. In this county we stopped at Don Fortino´s house, the boatman that would make us company in this journey, who immediately offered his house to rest and to prepare ourselves for this trip.  It took 5 minutes to get to the wharf, and we did that in our tour guide´s truck, who also gave us life jackets as soon as we got there since it is an indispensable requirement for our safety.

Finally, we took the boat, a long and narrow wood canoe with capacity for 12 people approximately. An oar was given to each one of us, and considering our lack of experience, the best way of doing it was advised, which made it a lighter ride since our tour guide and boatman took the key positions on the boat. Admiring the wonderful natural scene that surrounded us made the journey quicker than what we thought it would be.

The water of the river has a beautiful turquoise color. In the border of the river we could admire enormous limestone rocks with lots of vegetation hanging from them, like cedars among others. One of the most spectacular rock formations we could observe in this route are the kárstuicas, where big rocks have undergone a structure erosion due to the water that when being accumulated in the lines of weakness of the rock, it dissolved the calcic carbonate.

After riding few kilometers upstream, we stooped the boat to visit another wonderful place, La Cueva del Agua (Water´s Cave). This is a precious flooded cavern that can be found by climbing on a slope 50 meters away from the border of the river. There, those who wanted had the opportunity of swimming in its calm and cold crystalline water with navy blue tonalities that reach the 40 meters of depth. It is an enormous natural swimming pool with a spectacular stalactite ceiling. After having a good time, we continued with our route to the cascade 2 KM upstream.

Shortly before arriving to Tamul our tour guide stopped the canoe in front of an enormous rock from where we could enjoy the beautiful landscape and cascade. Because of the cascade’s strong 105 meter fall and the magnitude of its curtain that at time of rain reaches up to 250 meters, it is not recommended to approach more. It is also not necessary either, since that point is ideal to be able to admire the cascade in its entire splendor.

In that point our tour guide invited the most ventured ones climb a rock crag that’s a little bit higher to enjoy more the wonderful view. After diving into the river and swimming towards the canoe, which ended up being a life time experience, we headed our way downstream, but not before we had another wonderful experience swimming in the rapids that form in the way.

Three hours after leaving, we were back in La Morena on our way to lunch to Don Fortino´s house, who in able to offer this service to tourists, he built an enormous “palapa” in his garden where we were taken care of like royalty. The exquisite food, a delicious variety of regional cuisine counting on more than 6 dishes, was included in the price of the trip.

At about 5 PM, after eating, we headed back to Tampico. This is an option; the other option is staying in Cd. Valles and touring the next day through some of the other wonderful sites that surround this region.

TIPS: Do this trip guided by a company certified to do so. Use sunscreen and wear a bathing suit, shorts, t-shirt and a cap to protect you from the sun. Don’t forget un-slippery flip flops or water shoes. This trip is right for all of family members, including kids that can handle the 3 hour boat ride and older people that do not need special care. It is not recommended to visit this place on rain season (August and September). In summer the cascade’s curtain can diminish to 60 meters wide. The guided tour is carried out for a minimum group of 5 people. For more information visit www.madresierra.com or call (481)383-1727.
