The Water Pools

The word Cenote comes from the mayan d’zonot that means hole in the ground. The cenotes are natural wells that are formed after rock caverns of hydrothermal sulfuric waters collapse. In Tamaulipas there are only few cenotes, four of them, El Zacatón, La Pila Verde, El Caracol and La Pilita. These are located in the Aldama municipality, about 12 Km. to the west inside a private property near the Ejido El Nacimiento. Access to this site is allowed under previous permit from the owners only if the natural surroundings are properly taken care of. These wells are communicated underground but are different in color, transparency and the sulfur content of their waters.
El Zacatón
The Zacatón is a great well or cenote of 140 meters of diameter with a circumference almost perfect that is flanked by 20 meter stone walls. It has a depth of approximately 328 meters and has been investigated by expert divers and is among the 98 deepest places in Mexico. In its waters there are chinampas or floating islands made of grass where its name is derived. In 1994, Sheck Exley, the best world diver of caverns lost his life at El Zacatón while trying to break the record of 1000 feet.
The Pila Verde
This well is located only 500 meters from El Zacatón. Despite its short distance, this place is different; the color of the water is dark blue and is surrounded by extensive vegetation. Its diameter is bigger and the depth of its waters is lesser, approximately 200 meters.
El Caracol
It measures 12 meters diameter and its spring in the lower part is 5 meters. It was given this name by its conical form.
La Pilita
The diameter of this well is 30 meters and the water is almost at ground level, it is considered as one of the deepest water wells in the world.
