Tamaulipas Artificial Reef

Starting from March 30, 2004 the southern part of Tamaulipas has an artificial reef that will serve as a habitat for a vast biodiversity of species, besides supporting the development of marine and scientific investigations. It was formed with the sinking of the destroyer of the Mexican navy called Usumacinta E-20. This reef is the first of its type in a zone where there are no reefs since there are no favorable conditions for one to be formed. In addition it will bring enormous ecological benefits.
This artificial reef is located 35 meters deep and only 17 Km. away from the Malecón. Near the zone there is a diving school that offers diving classes and equipment rental.
