The Cathedral

One of the greatest architectural creations of this city is Tampico’s Cathedral, also known as the Temple of the Immaculate Conception. Its construction began back in 1841 and suffered several adaptations and renovations.

This church has a central aisle and two lateral aisles separated by half point arches, a cupola and Romanesque style domes all decorated from the inside. It also has arches and fresco walls painted with religious details.

The central aisle is covered with swastikas and leads to the main altar, one of the most important elements inside the cathedral. This Neoclassic style altar made of white Carrara marblework is a creation of the Biagi brothers. It was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

Its Neoclassic style façade is covered by brown quarry. It has two towers. One of them has an English clock donated by Don Angel Sainz Trápaga in 1879.It also has three enormous access doors. At the top of the cathedral there is a frontispiece creation of Pepe Ruiz Diaz which presents in small mosaics important aspects of the city and its religious life.
