Liberty Square

The Liberty Square was first called Dock Square during the beginnings of this city. It is one of the two squares that were used to trace the city. That is why many of the first houses and stores were built around them. Walking along the halls of the buildings that surround this beautiful square invite us to travel way back to the past and remember the city’s splendor epoch, a period in which it was an important commercial center visited by many important people from all around the world that established important stores to make a fortune.

We recommend to start your tour in the corner of the streets Aduana and Héroes del Cañonero where one of the most beautiful and best preserved buildings is located, the Antiguo Salón Palacio (1855). It has three levels and a metallic entrance hall which holds some forged iron balconies. In the principal façade’s sidewalk, there is a bronze statue of Humphrey Bogart who participated in the Oscar winning movie El Tesoro de la Sierra Madre, filmed in this city.

Next, you will find other beautiful buildings such as the Villarreal and the Mercedes Buildings which has a bronze statue of Don Porfirio Díaz who stayed in this building during some of his visits.

Las Novedades Building is just across the street. This building recovered its original appearance after its reconstruction. Along the Madero Street in front of the square the Alicia (1844), the Telegraph (1908), Post Office (1907) and the Obregon buildings are located. The last one was built by Don Ramón Obregón in 1904 in order to establish the store La Mina de Oro (The Gold Mine). In the square there is a monument dedicated to the soldiers that achieved Tampico’s Victory in 1829, a bronze sculpture that represents a Mexican soldier of the Regular Army of those times.

In the corner of the streets of Juárez and Madero one of the most valuable buildings of this city is located called as the Antigua Casa de Castilla, where the rendition of the invasive army held place on September 11th of 1820. Along the same street, El Comanche is located as well as the building that housed Farmacias El Fénix previously known as Botica Nueva de Don Felipe González (1871-1875). At the end of the street you will find Ferretería La Fama, one of the most prosperous stores in the Golden Epoch.

In the front sidewalk you will find the Campana or Bell Building, named like this because there used to be a bell that indicated the beginning and the end of the commercial activity of the city during those times. Following the same block, a modern building that houses the Best Western Sevilla Hotel and La Sevillana is located, followed by the column that represents the resettlers of Tampico. At the end of this tour around the square, you will see the building of Secretaría de Hacienda and La Palma Building.
